Environmental SPECIALIST


SUMMARY:
Barker Lemar Engineering Consultants, located in West Des Moines, Iowa is currently seeking a full time Environmental Specialist. This position's typical work weeks are 40-50 hours per week. Frequent overnight travel may be required, at times. This work is primarily outdoors, working year round and in all weather conditions. 


DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

1. Complete Drilling Activities as assigned by Project Management. Duties include but are not limited to: assisting Environmental Driller with setup and completion of core samples, installing PVC or metal pipe for groundwater testing, Set up drilling rig and stabilizing equipment per safety guidelines. Shovel and or move earth or rock as needed. Record drilling progress, logs borings, and documents sample collection and geological data as directed by Driller.
2. Complete Field Technician Activities as assigned by Project Management. Duties include but are not limited to: soil and groundwater sampling, field measurements, pipe pressure testing, free product recovery, slug testing, water level measurements, GPS surveying, and occasionally responding to emergency response requests, assisting Environmental Driller with setup and completion of core samples, installing PVC or metal pipe for groundwater testing.
3. Accurately and in a timely manner repairs and performs maintenance on field equipment.
4. Coordinate activities with Project Managers to obtain optimum production and utilization of staff and equipment.
5. Record the amount of time worked on billable projects and other activities in an accurate and timely manner.
6. Plan field activities and establishes priorities in keeping with effective operations and cost factors.
7. Revise priorities as a result of equipment failure, operating problems or weather conditions.
8. Proposes changes in processes, or use of materials or services which would result in cost reduction and improvement of customer satisfaction.
9. Maintain and secure all company property assigned to or used by him/her.
10. Utilize project/accounting software per company guidelines to track time and expenses.
11. Understand and promote company philosophy to all staff, clients, vendors, and regulators.


QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school education or equivalent

  • Preferred two- or four-year college degree in Environmental Science or field-related experience and/or training.

  • ​Mechanical ability and aptitude, knowledge of, and ability to work with tools, ability to determine how machinery/mechanicals operate.

  • Pre-employment drug screen and physical are required

  • Clean driving record


WORKING CONDITIONS
Due to the nature of the duties described, candidates must be able to operate hand tools, power tools, and is frequently required to stand and walk. Additional physical requirements include exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly. This work is primarily outdoors, working year round and in all weather conditions.
